Aeroponics does not need a substrate since it basically entails the growing of different plants while suspending their roots in different deep air or growth chambers. The reason why this method is common is that there is good aeration.
Ebb-flow systems are types of hydroponic systems that are very common in home hydroponic. Ebb-flow systems are easy to construct and they can be built with any material which might be found lying around. The drip system is the most common type of hydroponic system used by many farmers around the world. It is not a hard concept that requires only few parts yet proved to be versatile and effective. Here people just drip nutrient solutions on different plant roots so as to keep the roots moist.
