I have been working with Wedi board as a light-weight sturdy substrate. It is water-proof, does not warp, and quick to reduce. I reduce it with a box cutter kind tool and then I cover it with a thin film of thinset mortar. It is significant to set up the hanging mechanism before beginning to mosaic. If a piece of tesserae is thicker than preferred, just press it into the styrofoam to make a dent and partially embed it.
