For nearly the whole of recorded history, candles have been the primary supply of light in northern and central Europe. Regions that have been additional south employed oil lamps due to the warmer climate in which candles softened and bended producing it a second decision for light.
Folk saints, such as La Santisima Muerte, are saints not recognized by the Church, but quite a few nonetheless have huge faithful followings. Photo is a scan of my private copy of this book. On the third Sunday of Advent, the mother of the household lights the very first two purple candles and the rose candle. The 3 candles are then lit during the third week of Advent.
